Nursing and the Political Agenda

Canada’s Parliamentary System

Committee Studies and Reviews

  • Members of committees can agree to take on a particular issue; for example, the Senate committee on social affairs science and technology agreed to do an in-depth analysis of the status of mental health services in Canada.
  • Research is commissioned by the committee.
  • Input is invited from expert witnesses, representatives of affected stakeholders and the public.
  • A report is prepared identifying actions to be taken by government.
  • The report is tabled in the House of Commons or Senate.
  • The government is obliged to respond to the report within a specified number of days.
