2011 National Nursing Week
History of National Nursing Week
In 1971, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) designated May 12 – Florence Nightingale’s birthday – as International Nurses Day. In 1985, in recognition of the dedication and achievements of the nursing profession, the Canadian minister of health proclaimed the second week of May as National Nurses Week. May 12 is also recognized as Canada Health Day.
The name changed to National Nursing Week in 1993 to emphasize the profession’s accomplishments as a discipline. The purpose of National Nursing Week is to increase awareness among the public, policy-makers and governments of the many contributions nurses make to the well-being of Canadians.
Wanted: A Unique Theme with Impact
Join the contest fun for a chance to win $200 cash! National Nursing Week is your week. Let’s work together to create a meaningful theme that inspires and motivates. It should capture one or more facets of nursing, reflect the values of the profession and celebrate the contributions of nurses in all jurisdictions.
The theme will be in effect for two years. Please note that if your theme is chosen, you will be asked to sign a release form giving CNA all rights to the theme. As well, CNA reserves the right to edit your theme to better align it with the nursing interests of the day.
Submit your suggestion by e-mail to: youropinion@cna-aiic.ca. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, September 30, 2010.
