Gloria Steinem From Evolution to Revolution: Unleashing the Collective Power of Nursing and Its Leadership

Author, feminist activist and lecturer, Gloria Steinem is an international symbol of the fight for equality and equity between women and men and for human rights more broadly. As a leader of one of the most influential social movements of the 20th century, Steinem has been masterful in harnessing the power of individuals and groups to transform society. In this evening’s presentation, Steinem will inspire us to unleash our capacity for action as we come together to mobilize nursing leadership across Canada.

Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem is a writer and feminist activist. She travels around the globe as an organizer and lecturer and is a frequent media spokeswoman on issues of equality. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples, and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice.

In 1972, Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine, and she remained one of its editors for 15 years. She continues to serve as a consulting editor for Ms. and was instrumental in the magazine’s recent move to join and be published by the Feminist Majority Foundation. In 1968, she helped found New York magazine, where she was a political columnist and wrote feature articles. As a freelance writer, she has been published in Esquire, The New York Times Magazine and many women’s magazines as well as in publications in countries outside of the United States.

Steinem helped found the Women’s Action Alliance, a pioneering national information centre in the United States that specialized in non-sexist, multiracial children’s education, and the National Women’s Political Caucus, a group that continues to work to advance the numbers of pro-equality women in elected and appointed office at national and state levels. After co-founding Voters for Choice, a pro-choice political action committee, and being its president for 25 years, she continued with the Planned Parenthood Action Fund when it merged with Voters for Choice for the 2004 American presidential elections.

As a writer, Steinem has received the Penney-Missouri Journalism Award, the Front Page and Clarion Awards, National Magazine award, an Emmy Citation for excellence in television writing, the Women’s Sports Journalism Award, the Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Society of Writers Award from the United Nations and, most recently, the University of Missouri School of Journalism Award for distinguished service in journalism.

Steinem also received the first doctorate of human justice awarded by Simmons College, the Bill of Rights Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, the National Gay Rights Advocates Award, the Liberty Award of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Ceres Medal from the United Nations and a number of honorary degrees. Parenting magazine selected her for its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995 for her work in promoting girls’ self-esteem, and Biography magazine listed her as one of the 25 most influential women in America.
