Celebrate National Nursing Week, May 9-15 – Advisory
Ottawa, May 6, 2011 – Canadians across the country will celebrate National Nursing Week during the week of May 12, which is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The theme this year is Nursing – the health of our nation. May 12 is also International Nurses Day, whose theme is Closing the gap: Increasing access and equity.

May 12 will see nursing groups present a brief before the Supreme Court in favour of harm reduction strategies such as those in place at Insite, Vancouver’s supervised injection facility. On May 11, the Canadian Nurses Association will be announcing the winners of this year’s Employer Recognition Awards.
Of special interest this year is the Canadian Nurses Foundation’s first annual Nightingale Gala which will take place in Ottawa on May 10. It will be a health-care who’s who coming together in support of nursing research, education and clinical excellence.
