Statement by CNA president Karima Velji on National Nursing Week

Ottawa, May 11, 2016 - “Every day, nurses support patients and families across the country. They guide people toward better health, contribute to the development of healthy public policies, conduct research, provide leadership and teach the next generation of nurses.

“With more than 406,000 regulated nurses in Canada, nurses really are the backbone of our universal health-care system. If we consider our rapidly aging population, the nursing role is more important than ever, and its significance will only continue to grow in the years ahead.

“This week, we invite all Canadians to reflect on the contribution of nursing. As we celebrate the profession, I invite you to have a special thought for the nurses in Alberta who are helping those displaced by the fires in Fort McMurray. As first responders, they are essential in supporting the most vulnerable during and after the evacuations.

“National Nursing Week offers a tremendous opportunity for all nurses from different backgrounds to come together and celebrate the great work they do every day. Together, they make an exceptional difference in the daily lives of all Canadians!”
