John Abbott
Chief Executive Officer
Health Council of Canada

“As a health policy commentator, I am always encouraged when we are able to put a human face on the issues our primary health care providers are addressing along with the solutions they apply in their practices. Otherwise, our knowledge of the impact of primary health care, along with our ongoing health policy and program discussions, are void of humanness. CNA’s Leadership in Primary Health Care series is to be applauded for the manner in which the stories are told — inclusive of the personal perspective of both nurse providers and the persons they serve. The stories illustrate quite succinctly the central theme of the series, that being the important role nurses play at all levels of health care — from bedside to community advocacy — and their capacity to collaborate across professions and society at large. Also, they identify how nurses, among the many roles they play, are patient educators as well as innovators in our health system. I commend CNA for having the foresight to celebrate the work of nurses and their leadership role in health care in Canada in this way. No doubt these stories will be a great learning tool for all of us and a great acknowledgment of the 35th anniversary of the World Health Organization’s Alma Ata Declaration as an important policy legacy.”
