May 8, 2023 — Today is National Indigenous Nurses Day and we recognize the exceptional work and achievements of Indigenous nurses in Canada and our colleagues at the Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association (CINA). We celebrate their efforts to advance the health of all people in Canada, support the nursing profession, and advocate on behalf of Indigenous Peoples.
“Indigenous nurses are an integral part of Canada’s health-care system. Their contributions to health care for all Canadians are exceptional, and especially for First Nations, Inuit and Métis,” said Sylvain Brousseau, president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA). “Indigenous nurses’ leadership and passion make a significant difference across settings, both in urban centres and remote communities.”
Indigenous communities continue to face inequitable access to health-care services and experience inequitable health outcomes. CNA supports the Indigenous nursing community and has worked for several years to find ways to meaningfully respond to the calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. In 2022, CNA held the Second National Summit on Racism in Nursing and Health Care, following the highly successful first summit the year prior. We continue to strive to achieve the action items laid out in our Nursing Declaration Against Anti-Indigenous Racism in Nursing and Health Care.
