Ottawa, February 6, 2020 — As we settle into 2020, which has been proclaimed the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) is pleased to announce that the Dorothy Wylie Health Leaders Institute has now transitioned fully under CNA.

“Our teams have worked together since 2015 to bring about this transition. I am thrilled that this stellar leadership program has been so generously gifted by its founders to CNA,” said Claire Betker, president of CNA. “The teams have worked diligently to put all the pieces together so that as we mark Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday in May 2020, CNA will deliver the institute with the leadership support of the Dorothy Wylie team.”

The Dorothy Wylie Health Leaders Institute will be positioned within CNA’s new Canadian Academy of Nursing. “The academy is Canada’s new leadership hub designed to educate, empower and support nurses to lead, advocate, innovate and influence public policy to create sustainable change,” said Mike Villeneuve, CNA’s chief executive officer. “Having studied at the University of Toronto with the late Dorothy Wylie as the professor in our graduate school leadership course, I can’t express how meaningful it is to me personally to have CNA inherit this legacy. The institute will be our premier residential program within the new leadership academy and is open to nurses across all the regulated categories and all domains of practice, as well as all other health-care professionals.”

The Dorothy Wylie Health Leaders Institute was founded in 2001 and has established a unique position in Canadian leadership development, bringing together people from all health-care disciplines to study leadership principles, models, skills and tools.

“Our intent when we began the institute was to create an engaging learning experience for nurses in any role or career stage to learn and grow in their comfort and confidence as leaders,” said the institute’s founders, Sue Munro, Julia Scott, Beverley Simpson and Judith Skelton. “Since then we have been honoured and privileged to interact with the nearly 2,700 nurses and health professionals who have attended. Their enthusiasm confirms our belief that the institute remains an innovative approach to developing leadership. Not only have we found this work some of the most meaningful of our respective careers, we grew personally as leaders along with our participants. We are delighted that CNA will take it forward so that many more health professionals will have the opportunity and experience.”
