Asha Jama is being honoured for her remarkable leadership in policy advocacy, health equity, and global health. A nursing student at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Asha advances health equity, youth engagement, and social justice through research, advocacy, governance, and community leadership. As student councillor, Asha represents more than 1,400 nursing students in university governance and policy discussions. Through the 1834 Foundation Fellowship, she participated in a research project focused on Black maternal health and presented the policy recommendations directly to the federal Minister of Health. She also disseminated research findings on sexual and gender-based violence to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women as a Canadian delegate. She supports youth climate and sustainability initiatives through the United Nations Association in Canada and serves as a youth advocate with UNICEF Canada. Through two co-founded grassroots initiatives, she helped secure more than $50,000 for youth mentorship, leadership development, and educational opportunities, exemplifying nursing’s future in Canada and beyond.
