Ottawa, May 6, 2019 – Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) president Claire Betker issued a statement today to celebrate National Nursing Week, May 6-12:

“I have been a registered nurse in Manitoba for over 40 years. I have worked in communities to promote the health of individuals and families and, most recently, have focused on how nursing leadership can advance health equity in Canada. I believe all nurses are leaders and it is through our collective voice and action that we will make a difference in the health system and the lives of Canadians!

“National Nursing Week is a great opportunity to recognize the leadership role of all regulated nurses in Canada. This year’s theme, established by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), is Nurses: A Voice to Lead — Health for All. The theme reflects the fact that every individual nurse has a story that has the potential to improve the health-care system. It highlights how nurses have a profound impact on our communities by improving health outcomes and ensuring all Canadians receive appropriate care.

“I encourage the public, governments, organizations and nurses to take a moment this week to celebrate all nurses and the profession of nursing — a profession that truly contributes to positive outcomes for patients, clients, families and communities.”
