January 22, 2016, Ottawa — The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) applauds federal-provincial-territorial health ministers for their work in ensuring Canadians “adaptable, innovative and affordable” health care and for a focus on improving care in the community for seniors.

Improving health care in Canada is a complex process with competing issues and priorities across multiple jurisdictions. Over the past months, CNA has been working specifically with the federal government on the needs of our aging population and on enhancing access to health care in home and community settings.

“While we recognize the challenges the ministers are facing in addressing these complex issues, we acknowledge the federal government for making health a national priority,” said CNA president Karima Velji. “In establishing home care, mental health, and the affordability and access to prescription drugs as key concerns, we can see an important early signal to all Canadians that health has become significant to the federal government. These topics would best be managed in an overarching, comprehensive health accord.”

“Clearly, the federal, provincial and territorial governments are all committed to improving Canada’s health-care system,” said Velji.

Taking into account the unique demographics of each province and territory is an approach that has great potential for ensuring access to high-quality care and giving all Canadians value for their health dollars. According to the health ministers’ January 21 statement, any future bilateral agreements will consider the different circumstances and starting points of the jurisdictions.
