Ottawa, November 22, 2017 — Barb Shellian, president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA), issued the following statement welcoming the new national housing strategy announced today on National Housing Day:
“Nurses know firsthand that housing is the foundation for good health, making it easier to raise healthy children, pursue education and be employed. When patients lack safe and affordable housing, they face challenges in self-care and accessing health services. Without stable housing, individuals face an increased risk of death and greater susceptibility to infectious and chronic disease, mental illness, substance use, violence and unintended injury. A safe and affordable place to live is a basic human right.
“Today’s announcement represents important financial investments that will help vulnerable Canadians such as low-income seniors, veterans, Indigenous Peoples, people with disabilities and refugees. As a result of the strategy, Canadians facing poverty will get a much-needed boost to support their health. In addition, today’s announcement is a positive step forward to reducing future costs to Canada’s health-care system.
“With the introduction of the strategy, the federal government is demonstrating that it understands the importance for people in Canada to have a place to call home.”
