Ottawa, June 20, 2018 — Claire Betker, RN, MN, PhD, CCHN(C), was officially installed as the 48th president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) during today’s closing ceremonies at its highly successful biennial convention in Ottawa.
“By working together and uniting the whole family of nursing, we have an opportunity to enhance health policies to build healthier communities everywhere in Canada,” said Betker. “CNA will continue to advocate for better and equitable access to care for all Canadians and we will continue to develop educational tools and policies to achieve better health outcomes.”
Betker is a visionary nurse leader whose contributions to the advancement of nursing in the interest of the public span her professional nursing career. Over the past 40 years, she promoted the health of individuals, families and communities across Canada. She advanced health equity by working with the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health. As the director of population health and health equity with Manitoba Health, she engaged in health policy and programs development. She holds CNA certification in community health.
The change of command came as CNA concluded its biennial convention, which was held in conjunction with its annual meeting. CNA’s presidents are elected to the volunteer position by CNA’s voting membership. Betker spent the past two years as president-elect and received the chain of office from outgoing president Barb Shellian.
CNA’s new president-elect is Tim Guest. “I am honoured by the opportunity to serve nurses across Canada,” said Guest. “As changes are happening in my home province of Nova Scotia and other jurisdictions, it is of the utmost importance to maintain a strong national and united voice for nursing across the country.”
