Ottawa, December 18, 2018 — The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of British Columbia (NNPBC) are proud to announce that on November 10, 2018, NNPBC was welcomed as CNA’s new jurisdictional member for British Columbia.
This decision means that all licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs), registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) who are members of NNPBC will now be eligible to be members of CNA.
“This is the first time CNA membership has been expanded to welcome LPNs and RPNs, who will now be able to join their jurisdictional colleagues as full voting members of CNA,” said Claire Betker, CNA president. “We are working closely with the NNPBC leadership team to determine next steps in the process and structure for LPN and RPN members to access all of the privileges RNs have enjoyed for more than 100 years. Stay tuned for more information in early 2019.”
“This is a very important and significant move for all B.C. nurses,” said Jacqollyne Keath, NNPBC chair. “We have worked hard to ensure equal representation and voice for all designations in the province, and this is one of the final steps to realizing that goal.”
After all the work done in recent years to bring the family of nursing together in B.C. under NNPBC, all nurses in B.C. finally will have the opportunity to be represented nationally through CNA, and internationally at the International Council of Nurses.
