June 22, 2020 — Tim Guest, RN, BScN, MBA, was officially installed as the 49th president of the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) during today’s annual meeting of members.
“For me, nursing is about leadership that advances the profession and the health of people living in Canada. CNA plays a vital role in this leadership by promoting and advocating for enhancement of the roles of all 440,000 regulated nurses — licensed practical nurses, registered practical nurses , registered psychiatric nurses, nurse practitioners and registered nurses — to strengthen nursing and the Canadian health system,” said Guest. “I am honoured to have the privilege to serve as the president of CNA. The association is going through a period of transformation and I am excited to work with all of you to implement the new brand that will carry CNA through the next 100 years.”
Guest is a visionary nurse leader whose contributions to the advancement of nursing in the interest of the public span his professional nursing career. He has 29 years of experience in the health-care system in Alberta and Nova Scotia, working in a wide range of roles from clinician to senior executive in academic, urban and rural locations. Guest has been a board member of the United Nurses of Alberta, College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta, Nova Scotia College of Nursing and CNA. He is currently an accreditation surveyor with Accreditation Canada and has an adjunct appointment with the Dalhousie University School of Nursing.
Guest spent the past two years in the position of president-elect and received the chain of office from outgoing president Claire Betker. Installation of the new president was originally scheduled to take place at the conclusion of CNA’s biennial convention in Ottawa, but that event was cancelled due to COVID-19.
At the annual meeting, CNA’s voting delegates elected Sylvain Brousseau as CNA’s new president-elect.
